Notes

182. April 22, 2022 - Courtesy is a tricky thing, as virtuous intent is not enough to satisfy the requisites of a social interaction. When you stop to hold the door for someone, if you've misjudged the distance and they're too far away, you're both in for an awkward experience as they traverse the excess distance. When you meet someone for the first time, kneeling to declare them the king of the seas and presenting them with a live lobster somehow makes them uncomfortable. But civilization demands of us a certain courtesy to oil the joints of society, so we must persist. Even if it means occasionally waving back at someone you thought waved at you only to find out it's the person behind you they were saluting, or that the rare soul gets offended by a jocular push down a steep hillside into oncoming traffic during a playful greeting.
